No. The Ramones wrote more than one good song. It is highly unlikely that Soulja Boy ever will. BTW, that Steinski review was really good.

I was more thinking along general lines: it’s pretty interesting how diehard rock geeks rejoiced (and the mainstream shrugged) when punk rock came around to oppose virtuosity with anyone-can-do-it simplicity, while the exact opposite’s happening in rap — the diehards hate the more simple all-hook/dance craze stuff, while the public eats it up.
Comment by natepatrin June 12, 2008 @ 12:36 pmInteresting. I actually was thinking about this the other day. I think it’s more a matter of simplicity done right. I mean “Dr. Carter,” is probably the most minimalist beat (other than possibly “A Millie”) off Carter III and I think most of the hip-hop heads thought it was one of the best cuts on the album.
In other news, I heard The Message the other day for the first time in the while and forgot how simple yet brilliant that beat is. In fact, that whole Grandmaster Flash album sounds more electro-futuristic to me than anything Spank Rock’s ever done.
